Tom Cruise might return as the ball-busting producer

Tom Cruise, whose star power has been on the decline since L. Ron Hubbard brainwashed him with paperback Sci-Fi theology, may have found his trump card. Les Grossman, the Joel Silver inspired cutthroat producer Cruise played to mean perfection in “Tropic Thunder” made an appearance in the MTV Movie Awards. Grossman was bump and grinding (wow, we never thought we would ever use that phrase for Bitter Balcony!) with J.Lo over a Ludacris jam. According to eonline.com, when asked about a future Grossman movie, Tom Cruise suggested that the project is in the works.

Look, there are two things about Tom Cruise and his Grossman that we like. First, after usually playing the good guy, Cruise finally realizes that he is a GREAT bad guy (watch “Collateral” and “Magnolia”) and a ruthless honesty emerges when Cruise puts away his pearly white smile and dons the black hat. As for Grossman, he was a potent minor character in “Tropic Thunder," and with Cruise stripping his well mannered red carpet persona, Grossman gave the war film parody a colorful element of surprise.

However, Grossman is a one note character, and if what the writers have in store is more hip-hop booty shaking, this spin-off has the potential for disaster. Frankly, even in “Tropic Thunder” Grossman starts wearing out on us by the time the credits start to roll. Anyways, it is safe to assume Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux will be involved with the screenplay, and while Theroux did good work with “Tropic Thunder” and “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2” felt like a lampoon of his first Tony Stark story (it’s funny, but not good). Maybe Grossman could be made to have had a hand in “Iron Man 2”; after all, he does relish success from disastrous productions!
