The Losers

Bitter Balcony has finally encountered a movie that lives up to its title. “The Losers," based on the DC Vertigo series by Andy Diggle and illustrator Jock follows an elite squad led by Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) who is double-crossed by war profiteer Max (Jason Patric) during a special mission in Bolivia. Believed to be dead, Clay and his gang of misfit soldiers – which includes right-hand man Roque (Idris Elba), computer whiz Jensen (Chris Evans), sharpshooter Cougar (Óscar Jaenada) and pilot extraordinaire Pooch (Colombus Short) – are left in exile. But when the dangerous Aisha (Zoë Saldana) proposes to bring The Losers back to American soil and kill Max, this modern “Wild Bunch” dives in despite Aisha’s nefarious motive.

Written for the screen by Peter Berg (“Hancock”) and James Vanderbilt (“Zodiac”), “The Losers” is so testosterone-driven that its ideas seem to have emerged from their jockstraps. The occasional wit and humor is beaten to death by plot twists that belonging in a worn out VHS copy of “Missing in Action III” (sorry, Chuck Norris). It's predictable and a viewer can go to the concession stand at any point in the film without missing anything. In Clay’s words after another something else blows up in this action romp, “outstanding." Not.

“The Losers” isn't helped by director Sylvain White (“Stomp the Yard”) either, who copies the Neveldine/Taylor team (“Crank”) indulgence of bam-and-boom tediousness. White put us in such an epileptic state that we weren’t sure if Clay was being played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan or a less charming Gerard Butler. “The Losers” is like a feature version of those Old Spice commercials with Terry Crews as a muscle-flexing behemoth yelling “Explosions!” as he kicks a building to the ground. Yes, it’s tough to hold an audiences’ attention for 90 minutes with the conveyance of a 30-second ad spot, and for that, these “Losers” fall terribly short of victory.
