Sex and the Sci-Fi?

According to a brilliant observation at IO9.com the recently lauded "Sex and the City" sequel is a Sci-Fi movie.

This almost makes it worth watching, but I don't think there are any Carrie Bradshaw chestbusters, so no thanks.

In sad news, Dennis Hopper has passed away from Prostate Cancer. We all know him from movies like "Easy Rider", "Blue Velvet", "True Romance", and "Speed".

We also enjoyed his performance alongside Sir Ben Kingsley in "Elegy", reviewed here.

Let's not forget his performance in "Super Mario Bros.", which he admitted in an interview to have done because his son needed shoes. How cool is that? :)

We'll be able to see him acting in two upcoming films "Alpha and Omega" and "The Last Film Festival".

R.I.P Gary Coleman

Gary Coleman sadly died today at age 42.

Bitter Balcony will pay tribute to Coleman's Arnold by using his famous catchphrase "What'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" on rich white men to prolong their perennial guilt.

Holy Shrek: the Ogre's last adventure is... not that bad!

Shrek Forever After

If best things come in threes, the opposite rings true for fours. Can we think of any fourth film in a celebrated series that might be remotely good? Number 4’s are usually lazy, unmotivated or unnecessary, resorting to the strokes that made the preceding movies memorable. “Shrek Forever After” is not different in recycling to the clever comedy that made the Ogre and his pals endearing. However, in adding a Capra-esque twist, this last adventure was, dare we say, decent. While it never tops the innovating satirical turns of Fairy Tales from the first two movies, “Shrek 4” manages to be more grounded that the inflated third film, softening the transition into the adult themes while still having some good fun.

Michael Bay to produce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle remake - Damnit!

So it looks like the Bay remake machine is at it again. He's out to ruin every cartoon and horror movie we've loved over the years.

We'd like to thank Mr. Bay for pissing over all the properties we like and wish him a big fat FAIL.

Stop making films. This includes producing and what you consider directing.

"....This deadly, brainless exercise in pointless tedium is dedicated to the screeching audacity of delusional self-importance that convinces these people the whole world is waiting desperately to watch two hours and 25 minutes of platform heels, fake orgasms and preposterous clothes." - Second sentence, first paragraph, Rex Reed's New York Observer review.

Zod bless you, Rex Reed! Zod bless you!

Are female characters underwritten? A comment on film feminism.

We watched the video below and it stirred us to write this post on the subject of female characters in modern film.

Are female characters in film too shallow? Sure they are. Let’s face it, men largely run the industry. The majority of the writers are men, too. Surprise! The problem with a video like this is that it presents two alternatives: 1) Men write movies with male leads in action movies or sexually charged comedies because this is the only crap Hollywood studios produce. 2) Men in the industry start writing more films with female leads. Neither alternative would solve the issue in this video because the argument could be made that male writers don’t understand women and can’t write about realistic women (as if the men in these movies mentioned are realistic).
