Avatar - Cool or just elongated Smurfs from Mars?

Avatar - Cool or just elongated Smurfs from Mars?

James Cameron fans have been waiting for his next blockbuster for damn near 12 years. It’s a wonder that such a long time between films didn’t make it more difficult for him to get funding. Contacts in Hollywood are said to run dry after seven years, but when you have Cameron’s moneymakers under your belt, Hollywood’s greedy little hands never let go.

The trailer is out and we have learned that Hitler is not very happy about it. What is Hitler happy about? If it’s not this, he’s bitching about his Xbox account getting banned (more on that later). Fans are not as impressed as most people thought they would be. Sure, when the first press screening of the trailer and the movie’s tech came out everyone was blown away. This never lasts though, and in our case (and not), impressions started to dwindle as soon as the trailer hit the Web.

So the question remains: Are the aliens cool or just elongated Smurfs from Mars? Smurfs is probably an overstatement on their blue appeal. If they had white hats and sang I’d support this. However, in the trailer, I noticed only one female, so the jury might still be out.

The fact that this movie was made by Cameron and has taken so long to develop has probably skewed people’s perception of what this movie could be. If this was a M. Knight Shamamamalaman (no, I never plan on spelling that one right) movie everyone, including this author, would be trash-talking it until the sun came up. But Cameron has proved that he can deliver the goods when it comes to something original, entertaining, and of a certain quality. Cameron puts asses in seats.

The movie looks like an interesting ‘70s sci-fi novel, which gives an original feel. However, there were a lot of sci-fi novels in the ‘70s - and a lot of them were not good. The story of humans subjugating other worlds is an intriguing one as it would seem like something we’d do if we had enough power. Hell, we do it to other countries when it suits us and this is to our own people.

The Na’vi sound like interesting creatures who will likely keep us entertained for the suspected two-hour running time. Sending a paralyzed man controlling an alien body to infiltrate and aid in their destruction sounds interesting, but it also sounds like it will lead down the typical avenue. He will meet some resistance because they don’t know where he is from, then a female will pop out that calls his interest. She will then show him their way of life and instead of calling for a medic because the lack of oxygen is making her blue, he will fall for her and fight his own kind to defend the alien’s home world. See! If she looked like a roach he would care less and annihilate her alien ass. Thank Zod for beauty!

The 3D tech in this film should be an interesting addition, but they are pushing it too hard. This film should stand on its own, apart from gee-whiz technology. The 3D effects look decent, but nothing light-years beyond what we have already seen.

All in all, we will probably be entertained, but not blown away. I have no doubt that Cameron can give us that much. Hopefully, he adds in a few explosions and shows Michael Bay that you can have effects, explosions AND a storyline.

P.S. Michelle Rodriguez is in it. Let me guess. She plays a butchy military woman who is completely incapable of smiling.

As for Hitler, here is his opinion on the Avatar trailer:

And here is his Xbox dilemma. The man should have gotten a PS3.

I wasn't really interested in the movie before; I'm not now, but I did enjoy reading your article. I might not see the movie, but I'll read your review when it comes out.
