Presence review

Taking a break from her workaday life so she can focus on writing, the nameless female protagonist (Mira Sorvino) in "Presence" visits her grandmother's cabin in the middle of nowhere. She slowly discovers that her desired solitude is invaded by a ghost in the house who watches her every move and a surprise visit from her boyfriend. The seemingly benign ghost discovers that there is something else in the house – and this could spell doom for them all.

It's difficult to write about “Presence” without giving away important details. The tale by Tom Provost gives a new angle to what hauntings might be like when the dead aren’t aware of their state of existence yet. So think of “Presence” in terms of a ghost story with thriller elements. And here’s a tip: when a ghost seems slightly afraid of what else might be in the house, you know there's some trouble ahead.

Mira Sorvino, Shane West, Justin Kirk and Tony Curran give solid performances in this slow tale, showing that the right cast doesn't need the support of fancy special effects or endless dialogue to keep an audience interested. A good story premise and a passion for the project will hold viewers. The cast worked gratis to see this film be made – and their love for the project is evident. West gives a strong performance as the ghost considering he has almost no lines through the film.

Tom Provost, who also wrote and produced, directed this film at a deliberately slow pace. Shot selection is superior, savoring everything from the landscapes to the haunting eyes of a dead man. Throw in a dreamy, haunting score by Conrad Pope and you've got a visual and audio feast.

“Presence” pays off in the end, answering crucial questions while leaving some points open to debate long after the film's credits have rolled.

Get on it, Hollywood: “Presence” doesn’t have a distributor yet. This is one of those cases where the artist (Provost) had full control and gave us something worth watching. Special thanks goes to him and the MIFFF crew for allowing Bitter Balcony, and the other MIFFF attendees, a viewing of the film before a lucky distributor is found.
