Among the lowlights from the 1990’s, like wearing your pants and sports jersey backwards or Vanilla Ice’s bottom bargain bin “Cold As Ice,” is Albert Pyun’s horrendous “Captain America.” This film featured J.D Salinger’s son Matt Salinger as the Star Spangled protector and a plastic surgery repaired Red Skull, whose head stays red in the movie as long as Holden Caulfield spends “The Cather in The Rye” not bitter( forgive my weak attempt to link one of America's most beloved writers with a guy who wears our flag's colors as spandex). This early version of “Captain America” hopefully remains in VHS format, so when some fanboy orders a copy from Singapore, TSA would prevent a catastrophic act of terror by simply swiping the video with a magnet. So, if a twenty one year wait for a film to do Cap justice was called for, we are glad to report that Joe Johnston’s new “Captain America: The First Avenger” is a steady action/drama worthy of one of Marvel’s oldest Comic heroes.

Set in the heart of the 1940’s WWII conflict, Steve Rogers (Yes, Chris Evans, an American actually playing an American!) is a puny kid from Brooklyn who dreams of defending the Red, White and Blue from the Arian cancer known as the Third Reich. Ridiculed and beaten up by bullies, Steve’s fighting spirit compensates for nature’s cruel joke of giving such a courageous soul a 110 pound body. Fortunately for Steve, his American values of compassion and bravery are rewarded with the finest steroid, eh, serum German Science has to offer. Exiled Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), in spite of the objections of hard-ass Colonel Chester Philips (hard-ass Tommy Lee Jones), convinces the higher ups to recruit Steve for a procedure that would convert him into a Super Solider, a classified project supervised by Tony Stark's father Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper).

However, after a failed attempt by Captain’s future arch-enemy Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) exposes the secrecy of the experiment, Steve is relegated to matinee spokesman for the U.S Army. Once again Steve finds himself an outcast, mocked by his fellow soldiers and with no allies expect for his love interest, Officer Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). But when Steve’s best friend "Bucky" Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is trapped in the battlefield, Steve takes his costumed alter ego to the trenches of hell in order to save his friend and other POW’s, and in turn, begin his destiny as the first Avenger.

Captain America, despite being one of the more recognizable Comic book characters, is probably outdated in an era where grayer anti-heroes like Wolverine connected with modern fanfare. If not for the whole Avengers hoopla, perhaps a film about Cap might have stalled longer. However, the underdog likability of Steve Rogers (performed with charm and strength by Evans), serves as a good contrast to the morally conflicted hero.

Veteran big budget director Joe Johnston ("Jurassic Park 3") shuns the indulgence of grandiose action scenes for a more grounded, if not slower, dramatic adventure. “Captain America: The First Avenger” also has some of the most visually nostalgic rendition of the 1940’s that I can recall; a rich representation of America’s innocence shroud. While I thought this movie and “Thor” would be lukewarm films at best, I was pleasantly surprised that both truly developed their protagonists without completely seeing their stories as an afterthought for next year’s blockbuster team up. So while fellow geeks have about a year to pick up leaked storylines about “The Avengers,” the movie about the original one should keep them satisfied.
