Finally, the most lethal hunters in the universe return to the perilous confines of the jungle in “Predators.” It’s a welcome home party for fans of this uneven franchise that began in 1987 with Arnold getting his ass handed to him in “Predator,” and Danny Glover returning the favor in 1990’s “Predator 2.” If being killed by Roger Murtaugh wasn’t a slap in the face, sharing the marquee with the Aliens in two terrible movies made these extraterrestrial hunters look like E.T. (Reese’s, anyone?). Robert Rodriguez ups his creative power producing this latest entry, “Predators,” and after nearly 20 years we’re as giddy as Mac singing “Gonna have me some fun tonight!”

In this installment, a group of mercenaries, killers, and mafia henchmen land on a jungle-ish planet that serves as the predators’ hunting ground. Adrien Brody goes full Clint Eastwood as Royce, a badass American solider for hire and circumstantial leader of this caravan or prey. As the group begins to explore their new, peculiar surroundings, they learn that they are being methodically hunted. Royce and the survivors realize they have no time to bleed (or anything else) if they don’t outsmart these otherworldly creatures who have a strange affinity for dreadlocks.

“Predators” is directed by the stylish Nimród Antal, the Hungarian-American filmmaker whose debut movie “Kontroll” was killer cool. “Predators” might not capture the scale of Antal’s potential, but it does feature touches of style that could come in handy for the young filmmaker in a future project. As for the screenplay, Alex Litvak and Michael Finch reference several details of John McTiernan’s B-movie classic, one that will have the cult audience “stick around.”

However, “Predators” has problems developing an interesting mix of outlaws that keeps it from being as good as the original. We were surprised that a Yakuza hit-man or a drug war bodyguard would relinquish power to Royce so easily. It was hard to stomach alpha males surrendering so quickly, even in a shoot-first-plot-second story. A subplot is tossed in about a war between two predator races, likely to justify a new design for the monsters, but is never given much importance to the storyline. Still, it’s sweet to have the predators back in the jungle, where they as nasty as they were meant to be.

I'd be interested in watching a sequel that continues this story and though I think the predators should never have too much about them revealed it would be necessary to see more of their lives behind hunting.

Brody was an interesting lead. I feel he handled it well and would be interesting to see more of in that role.
