A Taste of Art Basel, from Your Friends at the Balcony!

Bitter, Bitter Balcony, Movie Review, Art Basel  Art Basel

Miami's biggest Art festival, Art Basel, was once again a huge and successful carnival for the beautiful, the pompous, the bold, and depending on your subjectivity, the talented. The event is a sweeping spectacle where canvas meets break-dancing, folklore stomps into club- hopping, and the nexus of ingenuity gets to party up the way only Miami can.

We usually don't venture out of the confines of cinema, but as lovers of creativity, this brief departure from our comfort zone is welcomed. Hey, many great filmmakers gravitated to cinema after a vast resume in other disciplines, and if cinema is anything, is encompassing. Anyways, here are a few pics from several galleries and exhibits we got the pleasure to see. Now let us get back to our stick-figure drawings.

Note: some of the pieces where exhibited in galleries outside of the Art Basel craze.

Harry Potter Exhibit review

Bitter, Bitter Balcony, Movie Review,

Last weekend I, JAS of Bitter Balcony, ventured out into the harsh cold reality of Seattle’s mean streets [SNICKER] and attended the Harry Potter Exhibit. Pacific Science Center is currently providing the space where one can see mock mini sets, props and costumes from the series of films. Fans of the series were in attendance, of course, excited to find out what “house” they belonged to. I wasn’t selected to find what out what that was for me, but as long as I write for Bitter Balcony I suspect I’ll default to Slytherin, just like Voldemort. The sorting hat would have spoken and who are we to disagree with a talking hat.

While wandering the passageways fans pointing gleefully at every talking painting and detailed wand it’s easy to see that anyone who enjoys the series would find the experience entertaining. Costumes are set next to props, labeled with the character’s names and the actors that portrayed them. For Twilight fans, there are two articles of costume fanciness that were worn by that amazing talent that is Robert Pattinson.

127 Hours Leaves no Stone Unturned!!!

Bitter, Bitter Balcony, Movie Review, 127 Hours 2010Danny Boyle, Simon BeaufoyDanny BoyleJames Franco, Kate MaraAron Ralston (novel) Bitter,Bitterometer, meter 127 Hours(2010)

“127 Hours” is a story of a man, a boulder, and the most unlikely movie sidekick since Wilson, a water bottle. Outdoorsman Aron Ralston’s (James Franco) true life and death predicament is captured in HD life by Danny Boyle, once again bringing the hyperdrive urgency that made “Slum Dog Millionaire” and “Millions” go beyond the confines of their genres. In this tale of survival, free-sprit Ralston, on a whim, decides to caynoneer the cavernous mountains of Utah.

While Ralston’s adventure begins enthusiastically as he meets two very lost (and very pretty) hikers, a careless move ends up with his arm trapped by a boulder - talk about being “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” (Seriously, that’s the title of Ralston’s book). The rest of the film depicts Ralston’s ordeal, as the youth seeks a way out while his supplies, and his sanity, start to fade.

Art hits Miami at The Backlot!!!

Bitter, Bitter Balcony, Movie Review,

Bitter Balcony steps out of our film shells to let you guys know about an exhibit by local talent Marfive, Elex, Soy! and others. Tomorrow night, the guys throw out an opening reception at The Backlot. The works feature a wide range of mixed media and pop art, in the true spirit of the artists' abilities and influences.

We usually would encourage our readers to catch a film, but it's safe to skip "Faster" or "Burlesque" for one night to "broaden our horizons," as they say(Cher will still be waiting for you with her ass-chaps, anyways).
